I recently finished the Terran storyline in X3:TC, and I can't say I'm terribly impressed.
The storyline itself was fairly brief. It was spread out over a couple weeks because I was doing my own thing a lot of the time... But, ultimately, it was only about 10 missions or so. If I'd done it all in one run it probably wouldn't have taken more than a day.
The missions didn't really seem to trigger off of anything logical. I was, for example, given missions to transport passengers when I didn't have a passenger ship or a cargobay life support system. And nobody really told me any of that was necessary. So when I picked up my passengers, they just died.
They also didn't explain much. I was given a mission to go spy on a couple groups... And when I got there, they told me to drop a satellite. But they never told me I was going to need satellites, so I didn't have any. And after I went and bought some, they didn't explain how to deploy them.
I received a number of ships throughout the storyline... They handed me a new ship almost every mission. But, for the most part, they weren't very good. They were either ill-equipped for the mission at hand, or no better than what I was flying.
The storyline also largely took care of itself.
I had a mission to capture a ship as a practice run for a future boarding mission. But nobody really explained how to board a ship. And, even though I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, they eventually handed the ship over to me.
And then later I was tasked with boarding a ginormous alien ship. But I never even made it within range of that ship... Eventually the storyline just decided that it had been captured.
It felt like I could have just watched some of these missions from the comfort of a station. I didn't really have any kind of importance on their outcome.
Ultimately, I know, this is a sandbox game. It isn't about the storyline. You're supposed to come up with your own goals and make your own mark on the universe. And that's fine with me.
But I really was not impressed with that Terran storyline.
And now I'm wondering if I should bother with any of the others... There are apparently a number of corporate storylines... And something that eventually results in some kind of headquarters... And some Aldrin storylines... And some kind of final showdown kind of storyline... And I just don't know if there's any point in any of that.
Maybe I'd be better off ignoring all that, and doing my own thing from now on.
