One of the very cool things about X3 is the very lively modding community. If you go to Egosoft's website, under the Scripting forum, you'll see literally hundreds of downloads available. Some of them completely change aspects of the game... Others allow you to cheat... And others simply tweak or modify little bits here and there.
Over the weekend, I got tired of spending so much time just flying around in circles, trying to map the universe. It's annoying. You have the ability to program a ship's autopilot for exploration... But it is very limited. You have to do a lot of micro-managing. You need to tell it which gate to fly through, where to start exploring, how far to explore... Also annoying.
So, I downloaded a script that lets me hire a Universe Explorer.
I bought a cheap, quick little ship. Hired a Universe Explorer. And turned him loose.
So far he's just been puttering around in a couple sectors I already discovered, but he's doing a very good job of completely mapping them. He's found a ton of asteroids and some floating crates... I wonder if there's a script to hire a salvager?
I've also got a few traders working for me... One of them is still learning how to fly his ship - I stationed him in the Mars sector, and trading is pretty bad there. I let the game run almost all weekend and he's only level 3. I'm going to have to move him someplace more profitable.
Two of them have hit level 10 and started universe trading. They're just flying around, buying and selling, and making me money. Sure, they take a cut of the profits... And they upgrade their ships from time to time... But I've made a couple million credits off of them.
I also met my first Xenon Q... And died.
I'm still chipping away at the Terran storyline. They currently want me to go investigate a couple Split sectors... Which are on the other side of a Xenon sector. I wasn't really paying a whole lot of attention, just put my ship on autopilot and watched the scenery pass by.
Then I noticed a lot of red ships around the gate I was headed for... I still wasn't paying a whole lot of attention and thought it would be a great chance to improve my reputation with the locals. So I killed the autopilot and went on the attack...
That's when I noticed the Q. I was already within range, and it was already blasting me. I managed to survive one volley as I flew past it, but I hardly had any hull left. And then all the assorted N/M/L ships started blasting me. I didn't live long.
