Stalker is not a forgiving game.

I bought it for $5 on Steam this weekend, fired it up, gave it a try... Died badly. A couple times.

I love the setting and the backstory. I want to like the game - especially since I just paid money for it. But, wow. Brutal.

And the viewbob is too much. The screen bounces and careens all over the place. Made me feel genuinely ill. I didn't see any options to turn that off either... I'm going to have to find a console command or an INI to edit before I play much more.

Um, I don't know what you're talking about with the screen bouncing around. This is my favorite pure FPS, and I've never had this problem.
@Fallout2Forever It is typically called something like "view bob" in the options. It is not a bug, it is a feature. It is supposed to simulate the movement of your head as you walk around. In reality, it simulates the kind of bad cinematography that gave us the Blair Witch Project. In real life my head does not bounce around that much - or, if it does, my brain automatically stabilizes the image. Normally there's an option to turn it off. I did not see such an option in Stalker. It may be hidden in there somewhere... Or it might be possible in an INI file somewhere... But, as it is, the game is unplayable for me. The view bob is simply too pronounced. It makes me horribly ill.
@Olvel Hmm, guess I never notice it.
They've got a fix for the view bobbing..

here.

Do whatever it takes to fix the interface for you. Stalker is an awesome game that you must play to completion.
@EscControl Yeah, I found a no-headbob mod on the Steam forums. I was also pointed to the Stalker Complete 2009 mod, which dramatically improves the visuals. I'm thoroughly enjoying myself so far.
@Olvel Glad that you're now enjoying what I consider to be the best FPS out there! :D
I picked this up RIGHT before it went on sale (it's like Steam knows what i bought and then it throws it on sale to anger me)... haven't played enough of it yet but it is awesome. I took out all the soldiers at that first bridge and scooped a ton of hardware...love it!
@mantooth012 I wound up killing those soldiers as well... I was trying to be nice, I paid their toll several times over. But eventually I just got sick of it. Got some nice gear, made some cash... I probably just about broke even.
i snuck thru the first time in the tunnel with the electric nodes...and after clearing out those buildings so the STALKERs could set up camp, I decided I didnt want to mess with the tunnel....so i picked a fight!
@mantooth012 My first time through, I did exactly that. Slowly made my way through the tunnel with the electric anomalies.

On subsequent trips past those train tracks, I didn't want to mess with that tunnel. I've never been a fan of those kind of timing challenges... Like avoiding closing doors or crushing blocks... So I went through the military blockade.

The first time I didn't even hesitate to pay the military. 500ru seemed a reasonable rate to me. And I assumed it would buy me future passage as well...

But that wasn't the case. I tried to return through the military blockade and was asked for another 500ru... And another 500ru when I came back through. That's about the time I decided I was paying enough.

I climbed the railroad embankment and dropped a grenade into their midst. Took out two soldiers instantly. The rest of them came after me. I ran into a nearby building and waited for them to show up. They were very obliging... Came into my hiding place one or two at a time, and I finished them off with blasts from my shotgun.
@Olvel I personally find it a fun challenge to kill all the military men blocking the way.
STALKER's an awesome. Too bad the devs didn't iron out the glitches before they put it out on the market. The load times are torturous too

And for your info, I snuck behind the military guys... there's a ripped out fencing at a place near bridge. Then I came back and smoked 'em
@tiberiumshox Glitches or no, it's still the best FPS ever made imho. Mainly because it's so atmospheric!
@Fallout2Forever: Yeah, STALKER's top on my list... and being a major RTS gamer myself, not many FPSes do that
@tiberiumshox Yeah, I'm not a big fan of most FPS's myself. I can't stand the Halo series for one.
@Fallout2Forever It depends on the platform, the game, etc. But I'm not generally a huge fan of FPS's either.

I can't play FPS's on a console at all. I enjoyed the original Halo on the PC... Didn't think it was terribly amazing, but it was fun. I didn't bother with the rest of the series though.

I used to really enjoy Unreal Tournament, but I haven't played that in ages.

What I do enjoy is a good FPS hybrid... Something like System Shock 2, or Deus Ex. So Stalker is right up my alley.
@Olvel I've yet to run into a singe halo fanboy that can even begin to justify what makes Halo the best thing since sliced bread. Show me a massive Halo fanboy, and I'll show you someone who hadn't played a decent fps before the game.

I'm not that big of a fan of counter strike, but I've at least heard some really good arguments on why a lot of people like it.
